Pumpkin Picking With Twins; Tantrums and More

Last week, my mother and I went to my families new residence in Virginia Beach, VA. If anyone lives in Green Run, let me know! I love to do activities with my children and now that they are two, it is so much fun to go out and do more things. I was anxious (my mother as well) to take them pumpkin picking. 

I always think that my children are going to enjoy all the activities, that they share in my excitement. In my mind, my children are well behave. In reality, they are well behave, but they also have their moments. 

When we arrived to the Pumpkin Farm, the girls were ubber (yes, ubber) excited just to get out of the car. As we got closer to the pumpkins, Milani was a little frightened by the size of some of them. Mya, was not interested in the sea of orange and was more content walking around the entire farm. I told her that we could not walk around the farm and she threw herself in the grass to have one of her Mya tantrums.

Usually, I would pick her up and console her. This time, I tried a new tactic. I walked away. To the new moms out there, this might seem extreme. But, it was effective. Why? Because at that moment I turned my back, I heard these little feet coming running after me and then in one second, her little hand cupped mine. The reason? I was not feeding into her attention seeking and at that moment, I had full control. 

Meanwhile, Milani picked out her pumpkin and one for Mya. Milani was so excited that she showed everyone her pumpkin, I mean EVERYONE! She even went to the lady selling flowers and showed her the pumpkin. 

It was a quick visit to the Pumpkin Farm but any day with the girls is a great day!

Toddler Mondays: Mya and Milani's Favorite Words and Phrases

Your favorite twins are now 26 months! It is hard to grasp how much they have a grown. When they were infants I always wonder what they would sound like. What words they would say. In a blink of an eye, the girls have voices, they are speaking sentences, saying new words. Here is a list of some of their favorite words and phrases:

Happy Friday: Silly Questions To A Mom of Twins

Happy Friday everyone! I saw this topic on one of the blogs that I follow and I laughed at the end of her posting. As a mom of twins, I am hit with the silliest questions. However, I never laugh in the person face because they are asking to know what it is like to be a mother of twins. Here  are some of my favorites:

Dressed alike and in dresses!!!

1. Are they twins? *Yes, when they are clearly dressed just alike. I am not that type of mom if I had two daughters a year apart and dressing them alike. 

2. They are so cute, boy or girl? *This question came up constantly especially when the girls had pink blankets covering them. 

3. How do you do it? *I don't have a choice

4. Double trouble right? *Yes, my girls are two are into exploring but they aren't any trouble thanks 

5. Wow they are identical? *I get this question every single day. Each time I get this question I wonder if people are seeing something I'm not. One has a wider face and big cheeks, one is lighter with a narrow face. In summary, my daughters are fraternal twins; not identical

6. Who helps you with the girls? *This isn't totally silly, but I want to say I'm married, my husband does! or, I am not alone, I have tons of family support! But, they do not know. 

7. Do twins run in your family? *Not a silly question, but yes, twins run in my family and my husband's family.

8. Which one is the good twin? *They are both good, but they both have their moments, just like you and I. We aren't happy all the time right?

9. Was this natural? *Um yes, no fertility drugs here. I don't like needles

10. I don't know how you do it. *Not a question, but I get this statement followed by a shake of the head. 

11. Which one is older? *Does it matter? 

Don't they BOTH look friendly?

12. That one seems to be the friendlier one right? 

13. My cousins/uncle/daughter/friends/aunt have twins too. *That's nice

14. Do you want more? *No, that means that is another chance to have another set of twin. No thank you.

My Gym Fun With Mya and Milani

You know what is great about having children? All the fun things you can do with them and you as a parent are able to relive some of your favs for your childhood. I am a hands on mom, hence why I did not rest while my girls were babies. I would carry them, interact, always had them doing stuff. My mother called me a drill sergeant. My girls (as some may know) were born at 32 weeks and I wanted to make sure that they were hitting each milestone. I soon realize that they will hit each milestone at their own speed.

I am a mom that likes to go places, I hate staying in the house. The more my girls grow, the more active they have become. This only means one thing, gym!! I attempted to take them to the gym when they were 12 months and that did not go so well. Finally having a free weekend, I decided to take them to My Gym in Westfield, NJ; pretty straight ride. I will not bore you with a lot of words, the pictures speak for themselves. In other words, I need find an extra $200.00 so that my girls can enjoy.

I realized I have a lot of pictures of Milani and that is because...Mya was running around so much!! Next trip, Liberty Science Museum!!

19 Month Old Update: Mya and Milani

Time is truly flying. I remember posting my 11 week old baby bump on facebook, telling the world that I was pregnant with twins, being on bed rest, sleepless nights and now, my girls are true toddlers. I am so happy for their progress and sad that they are growing up before my eyes. I am not sad enough to have another however, let's not get that twisted.

 

Mya

What to say about my Cheeks. She is a true sweetheart. Mya still has slight tantrums, but she is a great listener. If you tell her no, she will stop and go on to something else. She doesn't get upset easily. She loves to share, climb on the couch and lay there as if she belongs up there. It is actually pretty cute. Mya still doesn't look where she is running or walking and ends up falling CONSTANTLY. It drives me nuts. She also loves her Nick Jr. shows. I try to cut down on the television as much as possible, but sometimes, when I need a minute, I know her shows will calm her down. Mya, although the bigger twin, is a very picky eater. She still likes her baby food and sometimes will take table food SOMETIMES. She loves to drink her juice and milk, still loves Cheerios and crackers. Mya is still STRONG. This little girl will pick up her ride toy and bring it to the living room. It is so amazing. She loves gadgets and still loves to close doors; then gets upset when she can't get it open again. Mya loves bath time.

Head: I never know, but she has a big head :)

Gross motor skills: Mya is running, walking, climbing, throwing balls. She loves to jump. She knows what she wants. Mya can focus when she wants to and when she sees a bottle or anything that she wants, she lets us know.

Fine motor skills: We love to watch Mya on her play phone. She starts dialing and places the phone to her ear. She builds with blocks, puts puzzles pieces back (sometimes in the right order). Mya loves to clap and when we say "good job!" she starts clapping. Mya is so helpful, she sticks her arm out to help me put her jacket on, she helps me put her hat on and shoes. She even tries to dress her self by buttoning or unbuttoning her pjs. Mya likes to pretend she is eating a bag of chips. The bag isn't even open and she will place her hand in her mouth as if she gobbled a whole bunch of food. She pretends to put lotion on her body as well. She knows Bye-Bye and will wave. Mya eats with her hands, but not using a spoon yet.

Body Parts She knows: Ear. Mya doesn't have much of an  attention span. She marches to her own beat, when she is ready she will and excel greatly.

Words She is Using: Mama, dada, caaaaaaaaaaaaaar, dooooooooooooog (yes, she sounds it out like that). Ba.

 

Milani

Miss Feisty herself. Milani is not a force to be reckon with. She will tell you off and then make you laugh at the same time. She is such a comedian. Milani only shares when she feels like it and boy does she love to eat! Milani is like a sponge, she picks up habits from daycare and brings it  home. She has tantrums that out of this world and starts doing this piercing cry that makes you just want to put her outside. However, she is full of love and she is a fire cracker. There is never a dull moment with Milani. Milani is always on the move, she doesn't like to sit still.

Head: I don't know

Gross motor skills: Milani is a trip. She runs, walks, walks backwards and on her tippy toes. She loves to spin around and most recently spins with one arm up. It is so funny.

Fine motor skills: Milani is extremely advance. She eats with a spoon and her fingers. She feeds herself, which is one less toddler I have to deal with. She builds and places items logically. She takes items out of the box and put them back and repeat. She loves to give things to her parents and she loves to fee me. She also pretends she is rubbing herself with lotion. Very cute. When Milani wants something SHE WANTS IT. She points to it and she whines...a lot.

Body Part She knows: Ear, eyes, feet, tongue.

Words She is Using: Back Pack, Dog and she points to the dog in the books and our dog, mama, bye, mmmm, uh (that is when she wants you to have something), she sings all the time, hi, she waves bye bye, Car, Good.

Mommy and daddy are so pleased with your progress so far. Until 20 months....

Inspiration: Moving and Project Nursery

Some of you may know that my family and I are moving. We are not moving far, we are still in the state of NJ and were still in the same city of Elizabeth. I have hated the apartment we are in for the year we have lived in it. The neighbors are noisy like I could never believe, I just hate this apartment. I hated this apartment so much, I never decorated. I left the walls white, I added a few curtains and that was it. Why? Because I gave myself a year to live here and get the heck out. Now, we are moving to a better place, we downsized, but we get so much in return. Now that I am happy with the place, I really want to have a nice space, something like that you would see in the magazines, but not for the price. To start this goal, I wanted to begin with the girls room. Since we lived in this hell hole, I really did not make their room a nursery or a transitional toddle room. I want them to have a nice space. As I researched with Mr. Google, I found this website ProjectNursery.

I was so amazed at the different ideas from other parents, guides and tools they had on their website. Where was this website when I was designing the nursery for the girls in our old place? Anyway, I was inspired by so many rooms but this one I really fell in love with.

Then I did a Google search and fell in love with the powder pink and aqua.

I don't know if it is the wall decal or the curtains, but this is the room that I am trying to mimic, or get close to. So far, we picked the color that we found at Home Depot.

I found the lamp that was in one of the pictures from target. The person originally paid $29.99 for the lamp, but I found it on clearance for $13.98. I just was not going to spend $16.99 on a lamp shade.

Target also had the white picture frames on sale for $2.00!!! I purchased four.

Ikea has the storage unit for $73.00, that I would like to get.


Project Nursery is a very useful site when you need inspiration, ideas, for babies or kids room. They even have ideas for birthday parties. My plan is to take the room that has inspired me and get items for less. I plan to go to the thrift store and find a white dresser.

Mya and Milani: 18 Months

I failed the blog for 30 day challenged, I failed the New Years resolution already. Basically, I have not kept my word on blogging regularly. In my defense, here is what I am working with:

1. Working on my masters
2. Working full time
3. Girls are in daycare and bring back colds, flu's, everything
4. I had the flu
5. Moving
6. Trying to finish the final paper work for my non profit
7. Did I mention working full time?

I have a lot on my plate. However, I do vow to take time during work (when I get in on time), to blog. Writing is my stress reliever. Also, I start to ponder what topics I want to write about. What will captivate my audience? Who actually reads my blogs? Then I thought, Jamila, just write for you. Write anything you want in regards to being a mom, a new mom, and a mom of twins. Write about your obessions, new baby products, what is going on with the twins. So, that is what I am going to do. Anyway, this blog is not about me, it is about my favorite two girls in the world! Mya and Milani. I missed their 17 month report (my bad), but here is their 18 months.

Anything New? Mya has a total of 12 teeth. She recently got two back teeth at the top and two back teeth at the bottom. She has become more picky in eating than anything else. Mya loves putting objects in my hand for some reason. She loves to dance now and pushes every object across the floor. She now waves bye bye. Other than that, she is still your sweet Mya. I Say Keep the Stretch Marks and Baby Fat!

Two things mothers can't wait for after the baby is born; work out intense to get their pre-baby figure and get rid of the stretch marks. As I write this blog eating a double chocolate chip fudge cookie from Subway's, you probably see where I am getting at.

Before I gave birth to my twins, I was not a size zero; I had a little budge, but I was not fat. Lets go back even further; all through high school and junior year of college, I was considered skinny. I was 110 lbs forever and it wasn't until I got a car during my junior year of college that the fat kicked in. Yes, I was not affected by the freshmen fifteen, more like the junior twenty. Let's fast forward. I was never health conscious either. I did and still do eat what I want, but it is nothing major. I do not stuff my face with five waffles, chicken wings, french fries, McDonalds daily, etc. I do not stuff my face with salads every day either.

There were days that I would look in the middle pre-babies and say "I really need to loose this weight," and then a week later, I would get bored of exercising and start eating junk. After my twins were born, like most mom's, I decided I needed to loose the belly. Being teased for being too skinny for a long time, I was content with the thickness that I had developed, but I did want my old flat stomach again.  I joined Weight Watchers and I even coughed up $100.00 for Insanity DVDS  and although I did see results with Insanity, I slowly found myself getting bored and having the urge to eat the junk foods again. By the third week, I stopped; I got unmotivated.

I went back to the mirror and I took a hard look at myself and I wasn't ashamed of what I saw. Weird right? But I wasn't. Here I was a 26 year old African American women who did what others dream of, having twins. I turned to the side and noticed the dark stretch marks that had made a home around my body and I was proud of them; it reminded of me what a blessing it was to carry my girls for as long as I did; it reminded me of how amazing a women's body is, what changes we go through. Even with my bulge, people still tell me I look great for carrying twins or I do not look like I carried twins (that could also be because I look so young).

Who am I trying to impress? My fiance? Who may think I should loose the bulge, but loves me regardless, but in the past, I was teased for being too skinny, now I get teased for being thick or they are not use to me being this thick. It's a loose loose situation in regards to my families approval.

One day, I will be ready to "Dig Deeper" and loose the bulge, as of now, I am content how I look and who I am. I say Keep The Stretch Marks!!! I say Keep The Post-Baby Body!!...Until you are ready to loose it.

Mya and Milani Mondays: Hurricane Sandy, Arts & Crafts

Unfortunately, we are the on the east coast where hurricane Sandy will hit. As my hubby and I are off work, the girls are out of daycare. Rainy days to me equals arts and crafts! I researched last night (while I was doing a paper for school) the kinds of activities that parents can do with 15 month olds. I came across this:

Pudding Paint

What you'll need:
1. Vanilla Pudding
2. Food coloring
3. Clothing you do not mind getting dirty
4. Blanket
5. Paper
6. Plastic or paper plates.

I so happened to have these neon food coloring in my cabinet during the days when I wanted to be baker (among other things).

 Next, I placed vanilla pudding in plastic divider plates and added the food coloring. Only a few drops.

 Placing a blanket that I did not mind getting dirty over the rug, we got to work. It took the girls awhile to figure out that they can place their hand in the pudding. They are still discovering texture.

 Here is Milani starting her art work, but got distracted by Sponge Bob. So, I turned the television off.

 Mya began to work on hers.

 Milani realized that she could eat the paint and got it all over her face.

If you do not mind getting EXTREMELY dirty, this a fun activity to do with your little ones. It exposes them to texture and color and plus it is FUN!

For Moms Friday: Happy 15 Months Mya and Milani

I know. Usually, it's Mya and Milani Mondays, however, their 15 month milestone so happened to fall on For Moms Friday.

Mya





 Hi! I'm Mya and I am 15 months old today with my twin sister Milani. Here is my update:

 Weight: 25lbs

Height: 30 1/2 inches

Teeth: I have 6 teeth now! Four up top and two at the bottom.

Feet: Size 5

Diaper: Size 5

Clothing: 24 months and I think I am ready for 2T (sometimes I can wear 18 months).

 Eating: I have decided to eat table food a little bit more. Cheerios are my favorite. I get cranky when I am not fed first and I start shaking when I see my bottle. I am still a big girl and holding my bottle, even when I am sitting up.

Playing: I still do not like to share and I still take every toy like it is mine from Milani. I get very happy when mommy tells me to clap and I perk up and start clapping.

Walking: I walk with my mommy, but not quite on my own yet. I am a pro with my push toy.

Climbing: Yes, I love to climb on my walker, the couch, the stroller and on my parents!

Fav. TV Shows: It is still Yo Gabba Gabba, but I also like Oswald, Dora, Go Diego Go and Bubble Guppies

 I still do not listen to my parents, and Milani is still my best friend. We love to crawl down the hall together very fast and harrass our dog Snoopy. I love to sing while at Church and go down the pews. I love to talk about anything and when I am deep into playing with my toys, singing makes everything better.

Hi! I'm Milani and I am 15 months old today with my twin sister Mya. Here is my update:

Weight: 23lbs

Height: 29 1/2 inches

Teeth: I have 5 teeth now. Three at the bottom and two at the top. How did my sister pass me?

Feet: Size 4

Diaper: Size 5

Clothing: 24 months and I think I am ready for 2T. Sometimes, I can get away with wearing 18 months

Eating: I love table food and hate baby food. Anything my parents eat I am all for it. I do not have one favorite food I have several! Matter of fact, anything I eat that is regular food is my favorite!

Playing: I am into placing objects in bowls or anywhere and taking them back out. I love my play kitchen that I unfortunately have to share with my sister. I love to read and now I am into taking stuff and throwing them out of my crib. I enjoy clapping as well.

Walking: I took my first steps a couple of weeks ago. I am standing on my own and I am more confident in my walking and standing abilities.

Fav. TV Show: It is still Yo Gabba Gabba, but I love Sponge Bob!

"I'm good", "ADADA," are my favorite words to speak. I laugh at pretty much anything, especially when it comes to my sister. Yes, I love to harrass Snoopy too and beg for food from my parents

Where Are They Now? We Are 8 Months!

One of the purposes of this blog is to inform expectant mothers, parents or caregivers about premature infants  such as their development but also to educate and relate to those about babies in general, more specifically, raising twins. My blog incorporates many different avenues, I like to think, I offer tips, advice and stories for everyone, including those who do not have children...yet.

When I first began this blog, I wanted to share stories about being a new mom to twin girls who were also born 2 months early. As I started writing and receiving comments, I realized that I had a lot more to offer, advice, tips, secrets, not just about raising premature infants but on raising babies in general. Parenthood is sometimes an experiment; we figure out what works, what doesn't and try to fix it depending on the baby.

My soon to be husband and I (yes, we finally set a date) are asked many questions on our daily trips with the girls, but the main question that is asked is "how do we do it?" That question will be answered in a different blog or perhaps, a video of a typical day for us, however, we sometimes receive comments on the size of the girls.

Technically, the girls are 8 months, gestational (the age due to being born early) is 6 months. Frankly, I do not put too much emphasis on their gestational age. Some parents of preemie think gestational age plays a significant role and it does, but they get so wrapped into it that they think their infant will also we a preemie.

Unfortunately, being born early may cause some delays (some more significant than others) in development. Although for some babies (full term included) may reach milestones later on or not at all, as a parent of twins who were born early, I pay close attention. It becomes apparent as to whom has it what milestone because I have two.

As I share my beautiful girls in the world (yes, I am bias) with the social media community, many wonder how they are developing. I received a comment through an email from a person who assumed that because the girls were born early that they would automatically encounter disabilities later in life. I am not sure what the future will hold, but as of date, my girls are developing wonderfully. But, do not take my opinion, take the opinion of their doctor as well.

I have stated in several blogs that I was truly blessed that my girls did so well after being born 2 months premature. As they grow, I can see where being born early is affecting them. For starters, the girls are a lot shorter than most babies that are their age. It could also be that their parents are short. The girls have smaller feet and hands but weigh almost 20lbs (probably more). With the physical appearances indicating that they were born early, for the most part, the development says otherwise, mostly, they are right on target.

So, how are the girls doing? :Let's take a look.

Mya

Mya, first day of spring

Age: 8 Months and One Week

Weight: 19lbs 6oz (This can change on Monday, April 2nd)

Length: ?

Biggest Accomplishments at 7 months: Tripod sit for more than 30 seconds, getting the hang of walking, reaching and grabbing.

Full term developments at 8 months (If she was born at full term: According to Babycenter.com, Your baby's now exploring objects by shaking them, banging them, dropping them, and throwing them before falling back on the tried-and-true method of gumming them. The idea that you do something with an object is beginning to emerge (using a comb to tidy hair), so an activity center with lots of things your baby can bang, poke, twist, squeeze, shake, drop, and open will fascinate. Your baby will also be mesmerized by toys that have specific functions, such as phones. If she can't hold it up to her ear herself, do it for her and pretend to have a conversation. Over the next few months, she'll start to use objects for their intended purposes — brushing her hair, drinking from a cup, and babbling on her play phone.
What is Mya up to at 8 months? Mya can now sit upright and as babycenter.com mentioned, she is exploring objects, shaking them and putting them in her mouth before she drops them. This girl is on the move, thanks to her Aunt for donating a walker, Mya takes off and before you know it she is the kitchen when she started off in the living room! At the beginning of 4 months, Mya was lifting her self up during tummy and lifts her head and back off the floor, which she continues to do. Mya is going to by pass crawling is going to just walk. She is still fussy at times, but she is just a baby who knows what she wants. She continues to open her little mouth for food and is now grabbing the spoon to do it herself. She has not holding the bottle just yet, but we are working on it. She loves the Iphone, every second she is scrolling the screen with her fingers and ending phone calls with her grandma (I am not sure if she is doing this on purpose). Mya is still teething and the white fronts of her teeth are beginning to appear.

There are certain things that make her laugh such as spinning her around, her favorite show, Yo Gabba Gabba, she even recognizes the songs from the show when I sing it for her. She has not quite started making "bbb" or "ma" sounds but she is getting there. For the most part, she seems to be quite on track.

Twin Time: I remember when Mya use to never acknowledge her twin sister Milani even though Milani loved her from the begining. Now, the girls laugh at each other and talk all the time. Mya could be in the walker and Milani in the high chair and from across the room they are smiling at eachother and talking. It is a twin thing.

Likes/Dislikes: Mya loves to watch Yo Gabba Gabba and simply be entertained, she does not like to get her hair done.

Milani AKA "MiMi"

Weight: 19lbs 4oz (That Can Change)

Biggest Accomplishments at 7 months: Milani officially began to stand (with support), she also started reaching for objects, however they had to be in close proximity to her hand in order for her to reach it.

What is Milani Up to at 8 Months? While Mya can be the serious twin, Milani always lights up a room with her bubbly, carefree and friendly attitude. Milani always has a smile on her face and says hi to everyone, even strangers. After four months of consistent trying, Milani has now rolled over from the right side to the left while lifting up in tummy time position. Even though she doesn't move as much lifting, she is now rising on her hands rather than her arms. She now can take the pacifier in and out of her mouth as well as grab objects that are not close to her. She is fascinated with putting things her mouth and seeing what they do. Milani has started siting up as well for more than 30 seconds. She is trying to hold her bottle and the spoon during feeding time. Milani also drops objects on the floor. Although Mya is the more needed twin, Milani has begun to find the need to want to be held and receive attention as well. She still grunts at times to communicate.

A book worm at heart, Milani loves Dr Seuss and screams in excitement at each turning page. She has also found her voice, recognizing that she can scream as loud as she wants. Blowing raspberries with the tongue sticking out is her favorite thing to do while talking to Snoopy, the family dog. Always an independent, self soother, Milani can be by herself and be quite content.

Twin Time: Milani has always loved her big sister (by 60 seconds) Mya and she knows that when she screams, Mya laughs and responds. She even knows how to calm Mya down by taken her hand into hers. Sometimes, they act alike and do the same thing at the same time.

Likes/Dislikes: Milani loves to blow raspberries, read and talk to her friend Snoopy. She does not like to be on her back or alone at times.
