Eczema Weekend Blues and Happy 9 Months

It is often hard to keep up with this blog even though I am still a stay at home mom. I do have a few other things on my plate such as trying to start a non profit organization, school work and the most important taking care of my twin girls and my soon to be husband in a couple of months. When I once complained that days went by slowly as I stayed at home bored, now the days go by too quickly that I barely put a dent in my things to do list. If the girls are napping, I can't help but take a snooze myself.

This weekend was a surprise because the weather said that it was going to rain on Saturday. I hate rain on Saturday's, I prefer rain on Sundays, which it did. Saturday my father and my little brother came over to see the new apartment and spend time with the girls, which was a real treat. My father and I had a really close relationship when I was younger but it drifted after my parents separated and as I got older, we started to clash...a lot. It wasn't until his 60th birthday that I decided the over 8 months of not speaking had to end. We never talked about the issue between us, just moved on because it was important that he was in my girls life.

He has become the best grandfather that my girls could ever have. He loves them so much and so does my brother who is 5 years old.

Before my dad and my brother came over, I had an aching feeling that I needed to take one of the twins, Milani to the doctor. About three weeks ago, Milani broke out all over her face in red bumps. One day she had smooth skin and the next day her face had a huge rash on it and she consistently rubbed her eyes and her face. My first thought was an allergic reaction (still is a thought in my head) but I didn't know to what. I hadn't changed anything her diet to make her break out.

When a babies skin is irritated or dry, there is only one word that makes everything all better. AQUAPHOR! Although it is really vasline, this stuff seems so powerful for babies. I immediately applied it on her face, probably all day. The bumps then transformed into dry patches of skin. Luckily, that week of the break out, I was taking the girls to the doctor.

Mya, was diagnosed with Eczema when she was four months and we (my fiance and I) apply medication when needed. Milani never had a problem with her skin until now.

The doctor told me that Milani had Eczema as well but the medication that Mya has is too strong for Milani's face. She suggested using Aquaphor or Aveeno lotion.

A couple of days after that, Milani's skin cleared but then....

she received a huge rash on her right eye that she constantly rubs and it is still there to this day.

Saturday, I took her to the doctor, in which the doctor reconfirmed that it was Eczema and prescribed claritian oral once a day 2 ml.

I found this cream that my fiance uses for his Eczema and lightly apply it to Milani's eye as well as a cold compress, but it doesn't seem to do anything. I even see it appearing on the other eye.

Yet, she is in great spirits. She seems pretty normal; happy, friendly and smiling. I will keep everyone posted on the Eczema. I wish I could give advice for those who are experiencing the same thing, but I am in the clueless boat like every other mother. Because they are so young, there isn't much I could do.

Another a note, I never got to write a Happy 9 months post, so here it is.

Mya
Weight: 21 lbs 6 oz

Height: 26 1/2 inches (Yes she is short, but she was 16 inches when she was born)

What she is doing now: Not much has changed since they are only 9 months and 4 days old but she is still grabbing. She now knows how to move in the walker so well that she can follow my fiance and I and is now pulling stuff off shelves. She is still trying to lift her self up and she is trying to crawl even more. She can reach for objects in tummy time and crawl to the objects a little bit. Mya can also roll over...when she wants to. Mya loves to be spun around, hung upside down, thrown in the air and loves to do back flips.

Milani
Weight: 20 lbs

Height: 26 inches

What she is doing now: Milani thinks she can feed her self as she constantly grabbing the spoon out of my hand and putting it in her mouth. Well, she puts a lot of objects in her mouth. She loves the walker and she has discovered how to roll back and forth. She can reach for objects during tummy time and discovered a new way to laugh, which is very funny. Milani loves to be spun around and like her sister, loves Yo Gabba Gabba.

Weight Watchers Wednesday: Worry about the Stretch Marks Later

I dedicate every Wednesdays to blog about my journey with weight loss, or lack there of. A couple of days ago I looked in the mirror and was disgusted what I saw. I couldn't believe I had let myself go and using the I had kids excuse was no longer becoming valid (they are 8 months now).

My usual plan is that I start something and then I can't finish it. I ether get bored or I just get bored. I am stay at home mom and surviving on one income and therefore cannot afford to go the gym. I usually do Zumba, but I would get too tired to do it. Finally, I decided I needed to get my act together.

I am getting married 5 months! Not only that, I am 26 years old and too young to have a belly, kids or no kids. Monday, I began to get serious.

I have been a member of Weight Watchers for three months and finally began to get consistent. I struggled with what I could eat and affording food in the house was also a challenge. Monday, I finally stuck to my points plan and said good bye to McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza, Burgers, Fried Chicken and said hello to fruits, vegetables and smaller portions. I must say, Monday, Tuesday and Today were great days.

I decided that I needed to have a plan of attack. I wake up around 7:00 am before the girls wake up for their morning feeding. Put in 44-47 minutes of Zumba on the Wii a day (I am waiting for my insanity DVD to be delivered) and I stick to low point foods and constantly try to eat power foods, which are the fruits and vegetables when I find myself getting hungry.

My favorite advice that I received from Weight Watchers was...

SIX GLASSES OF WATER EQUALS THREE 16 OZ BOTTLES OF WATER!!!!

I hate water, but if I can drink four bottles of water I have consumed my 8 glasses for the day. So far, I have managed to drink two, which is four glasses of water.

I am 155 lbs, I am trying to get down to 137 lbs.

Christmas 2010, a month before I found out I was pregant

I Left Gerber and Went to Beech-Nut

Happy Post Resurrection Day! While we glanced at everyone's photos on Facebook pages, Tweets and even blogs of all the little one's on Easter Sunday, we realized that maybe we should have dressed the girls up; this was their first Easter. However, we took a break from church (we go every Sunday to new disciples class because I am getting Baptize) because we didn't want to be around those who go to church only on holidays, plus it was going to be too crowded (we attend a mega church). We just stayed home and enjoyed an Easter dinner made by my soon to be husband.
We finally received our family photo that we took two weeks ago! I think this makes up for our Easter photos right?

Anyways....

When the girls turned 6 months, it was time to introduce them to solids. I immediately bought a plethora of Gerber baby food and cereal. Now at 8 months and wanting to introduce them to different types of food, I realized that Gerber baby food in the jar, which is what WIC allows did not have a lot of variety. I then turned to Beech-Nut products and was completely amazed at how many variety of vegetables, fruit and dinners they had available. I purchased the vegetables and fruits that the girls were use to plus new ones to try.

In our new adventure of trying Beech-Nut, I began with peas and carrots. Usually, the girls love peas and carrots the Gerber brand, however, noticing the consistency alone, I knew the girls were not going to like it. I tasted the Beech-Nut product and knew why.

Beech-Nut, a Great Alternative to Puree Foods You Do Yourself

Most parents will suggest to puree your own foods for your baby because it is nutritious and less sugar. For those who do not want to or simply do not have the time, I believe (and this is my opinion) Beech-Nut is the best alternative. The girls were not use to the texture of real fruits and vegetables and it took them a second to get use to it. The food taste just like the vegetables and fruits that we eat, it even had the chunks of the vegetables and fruits in it. There was barely any sugar or salt in the products. Close to natural as we would get in baby food in a jar. I had wish that I started the girls on Beech-Nut and not Gerber.
Gerber is very sweet and the fruits do not have any natural substances at all. In comparison, the Beech-Nut applesauce, for example, had chunks of apples in it, while the Gerber brand is very soft and process with artificial flavors; there is nothing natural about it.

Both products use the different stages of babies development to determine the type of food to use and after reading the nutritional value for each product and although there isn't much difference, just the texture alone and the sweetness of Gerber says enough.

Again, this is my opinion on the two products.

For introducing your solids to your little one, I would recommend Gerber only because of the smooth texture. Both products have water in it, but I just find Beech-Nut to be a better alternative to making foods yourself.

What are you thoughts?

Lay Off the Burgers!

Yesterday was the girls 8 month doctors appointment. Usually it is a family event to go to the doctor, however, since my fiance started a new job and he was at work, I had to do the hour and 1/2 get the girls ready (and myself) alone. The girls were too funny in the doctors office. Milani decided to show the doctor her knew found trick and rolled over on the weighing scale landing tummy time position, lifting body and head like a proud peacock. Of course, Mya decides she is going to do baby crunches (lifting her head and shoulders off the floor in a plank position).  Here is a quick update about the girls thus far:

Quick Update!!!

Milani

Current Weight: 18 lb 5 oz (I don't believe, I think she weighs more)

Balancing a Relationship with a New Baby

Having a baby is one of the most rewarding experiences of a mother and father's lives. The idea of bringing another being into the world is a huge blessing. However, having a baby is also a stressful experience that often tests the strength of relationships. According to aboutkidshealth.ca,  more couples today are seeking relationship counseling after having a baby than ever before.

When the twins were born, the dynamics of my fiance and I relationship changed dramatically and the realization that our relationship pre-baby would never be the same frightened us both.

We did not know that the role change, new adjustments and financial set backs were the causes of our misunderstandings and conflicts. A relationship that was so strong was slowly crumbling as the diaper changes, chores, sleepless nights and feedings affected us both.

A New Mom

Both partners need to understand that being a parent for the first time is not an easy tasks, however, the role of a mom is the most challenging and role changing in a women's life. Aboutkidshealth.ca, describes the life change best stating that whereas we were once surrounded by friends, able to go to different places freely, now, our needs are less important and are secondary to a newborn baby. What my fiance did not understand (although he said he did) as a stay at home mom, my days are the babies; I eat, sleep and breathe them and when they were born, chores, cleaning and dinner took a back seat. My fiance would walk into the house from a long day of work expecting dinner and he often found himself making his own food; I just did not have time, which caused one our first arguments; expecting me to still take care of the house when I had my hands full double time.

I felt that he had one up on me because he was already a parent (he has two kids from a prior relationship) and here I was still learning. Rather than help me, he use to tell me what to do and I could not stand that. I do not like to be wrong and I like to get things right the first time; to me, I thought he was speaking to me as if I did not know what I was doing, as if I was not a good mother.

A New Dad

By the time I was done putting the babies to sleep, I was too tired and cranky to be intimate with my fiance. I was not ready for the sleep deprivation that I was experiencing and the arguing annoyed me so much that I did not want to be around him; he did not want to be around me either. Instead of being a team, we were becoming enemies. Dad.info states that fathers often feel left out because now the attention is on the baby. Fathers may also feel left out because they are at work all day and missed out on the new things that were learned. Taking care of twins is overwhelming and I did not realize how much I was shutting my fiance out; from our relationship and from him to spend time with the girls. I wanted to be super mom and do everything myself, but I had to understand that we are a family and he needed to be involved as well.

Helpful ways to Improve your Relationship With your Partner After Having a Baby

Understanding: Mothers are home with the baby for at least 3 months (sometimes fathers are as well). Spouses can help try to understand how hectic their partner's day is. Be empathetic that there will be times dinner is not on the table. Be a confident rather than distant, often times, your partner wants to talk about their day and have a sense of relief.

Communication: One of my fiance and I main problem was communication. We were too busy thinking the change in the relationship was about us being mad at each other rather than the big picture; a new edition to the family that we have to working into our relationship. We were both stressed out and frustrated. After realizing what was the cause of our down fall, we started sitting down and talking about what was on our mind. We stayed away from "you" statements and used "I" statements. Sometimes, when I thought of something that I needed to get off my chest, I wrote a letter to my fiance because I found it easier at times to express myself through writing.

Do Not Shut Out: Remember your partner is in this too. They may not handle the baby as you would but that is okay. Do not think that you are alone or have to be perfect in raising your baby; it takes time to set a routine and learn about your child.

Couple Time: Even if it for 15 minutes, find a time to sit and talk or be intimate. Do not forget about your needs, which is hard to do. If friends or family members want to help out, TAKE IT! They are offering for a reason.

Me Time: My mother suggested that when my fiance comes home from a long day of work, if needed, he should take 15-30 minutes to himself and when he was done, I would take mine. Sometimes, we need time to recollect our thoughts in order to deal with one another.

Some may read this blog and say, this will never be me. I never thought a baby would change our relationship, how could it? Having a baby is a joy. Remember, before it was just the two of you, in my cause we add TWO new editions to our already hectic lives. The best advice is communication. Our spouses (although we would love them to be) are not mind readers. Let your partner know what is going on with you before it becomes more than needed.
